[net.micro] versa-dos compiler

harkins@sri-unix (11/29/82)

strange request: anybody know of a C or pascal that will run on a 68k
under versa-dos?? thanks, ernie harkins

Whitesmith's C compiler runs under Versa-Dos. The way they normally sell it
to you it uses Motorola's assembler and linker, which require patience. For
$600 more they will sell you their own assembler and linker, which I am told
is significantly faster. These products do definitely work fairly well once
you get the hang of it, but you will spend 90% of your time trying to make
the system do what you want it to. Versados version 3.0 may be better; I
don't know. [The problems stem from both versados and the compiler]

I know some people with Charles River Data Systems UNOS who are quite
happy with it. UNOS is a UNIX look-alike that is supposed to also be a real-
time system, complete with enhancements to the special features you need.

Motorola is supposed to come out with UNIDOS consisting of some already
working kernal from a real-time UNIX look-alike with actual UNIX code
brought up on it for the shelll, utilities, etc. I think it should be out.

But to answer your question, Whitesmith's has a servicable C compiler
under versados. As for pascal, it comes with VersaDos... actually, they
want to charge you, but if you refuse to pay for it on the grounds that
you don't want it, well, it comes on the disk anyway... I don't know
how it works as I have never looked at it. Much, if not all of versados
is written in it.

Versa-dos 3.0 *is* an improvement, but in my opinion Whitesmiths' Idris
system is much better, easier to use and easy to get up and running (the
documentation is a mess, though). Idris includes many `standard' UNIX*
utilities (rewritten by Whitesmiths), but a full screen editor is still
missing (I am currently searching for one). And Idris doesn't support
the Exormacs(tm) terminal communications board yet. If you want to
use more than two terminals you have to an Exorciser(tm) communications
board with a Versa-bus(tm)-adapter. (Idris does have keyboard typeahead,
Versa-dos does not!). Whitesmiths does not give you any means to move
your files from Versa-dos to Idris (but I'm working on a C program to
read and write Versa-dos diskettes).

Why would you want one?
