From: Ron Natalie <ron@BRL> I've got a friend down at U of MD who is really interested in the IBM Lab System (Please don't call it PC, it is totally different). The thing comes with monochrome graphics (480 dots/line), a programmable button panel (alas the keyboard is an option) and some kind of Real Time Multitasking operating system. I'll see if I can get the sales literature back from the guy. Looks pretty nice from what I can remember. I also saw a note that said that they were considering using these for the IBM/CMU campus network project and UNIX was being investigated. -Ron

The IBM Instruments 68000 machine does not appear to be the winner that the IBM PC is, and it isn't indended to be a PC II. It was designed by a completely different group with somewhat different (and seemingly ill-defined) goals, but seems to be aimed mainly at the realtime world with IEEE-488 and A/D interfaces and lots of programmable pushbuttons. There is very little software. It isn't very compatable with anything else, either hardware or software, e.g. it uses a Versabus which is technically nice but not well supported with independent peripherals. The stripped price is $5695. IBM Instruments is at Orchard Park, Box 332, Danbury CT 06810, phone 800-243-7054. They've put large ads in Byte, Scientific American and other magazines in the December issue. John Levine, decvax!yale!jrl, ucbvax!cbosgd!ima!johnl, Levine@YALE
