F I R S T A N N O U N C E M E N T of the Eighth Parallel Circus Location: Toronto, Canada Dates: October 26-27, 1990 Continuing the tradition that began at Yale in 1986, the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto will be hosting the Eighth Parallel Circus in Toronto on Friday and Saturday, October 26-27, 1990. The Parallel Circus is an informal conference which emphasizes parallel algorithms for scientific computing. This is the first time the Circus will be held outside of the USA, and we hope to have many attendees from Canada, the USA and other countries. The circus is unique in that it has one and only one focus, scientific computing on parallel machines. Another feature is that there has been lots of informal discussion and a very healthy mix of industrial and academic participants. GRADUATE STUDENTS ARE ESPECIALLY WELCOME. *** Toronto *** Metropolitan Toronto, is home to 3000000 people. Canada's largest city lies on the north shore of lake Ontario, in what's known as Canada's "Banana Belt", because it's our "deep south". In terms of latitude, Toronto lies just north of Boston and just about on the same line as the French Riviera. It is a pole of attraction for commercial, industrial, scientific, cultural, sports and entertainment activities. Next to San Francisco, Toronto's Chinatown is north America's largest and that's only for starters. In some city neighborhoods, the streetscape signs would make you swear you'd dropped into Athens, Lisbon, Rome or Tel-Aviv. One of the best transportation systems in the world makes it easy to explore this fascinating collection of neighborhoods. *** The University *** The University of Toronto was first granted its charter in 1827. It takes pride in many famous alumni: Mackenzie King, Canada's Prime Minister for 22 years; Prime Minister Lester Pearson; Senator Keith Davey; Stephen Lewis, Canada's former Ambassador to the UN and the list goes on and on.
