[comp.parallel] Supercomputing 90---Who can give a synopysis?

fpst@hubcap.clemson.edu (Steve Stevenson-Moderator) (11/20/90)

I was only at Supercomputing 90 for a day. Is there someone out there
who can give some overall impressions of the conference?

I was there three days. The exhibits were first class. One
of the major talks was good - visualization. The papers varied
in quality. Many were first class, some were quite bad. There
were more good than bad that I saw. I believe that this conference
is growing and that the quality will improve as its reputation
grows. I plan to submit research and attend again.

My very personal opinion:

Technically lightweight, but a good conference. Mostly so-so papers
and presentations, lots of industry types and applications folk
(overpowering the academic systems researcher side), but generally
lots of good people around to talk with.... I attended only four
sessions... but talked with *MANY* good people. This conference
closely resembles the old Kartashev supercomputing conferences, except
in that this one is IEEE backed and hence is respectable....

My colleagues at Supercomputing Review went, and their coverage should
be in the December or January issue of the magazine. We Silicon Valley
correspondents, on the other hand, stayed in sunny California and cleaned
the cinders out of the fireplace :), so I can't give you the first-hand
story.
