                      A National Science Foundation
                Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement Project

This course will introduce faculty at undergraduate
institutions to the field of parallel computing. It will include
a survey of parallel computing technology, hardware and software,
and an introduction to parallel programming on a distributed
memory, message-passing architecture. The programming part of
the course will include work on a network of transputers using
the languages Occam 2 and parallel C. Each participant will have
a workstation for program development for transputers and access
to a fifty-node transputer network for testing parallel programs.
Instructors for the course will be Chris Nevison, Colgate
University; Nan Schaller, Rochester Institute of Technology; and
Paul Tymann, SUNY Oswego.

Our objective is to prepare faculty to teach parallel
computing either as a topic in the context of other courses such
as Programming Languages, Algorithms, Graphics, Computer
Architecture, etc., or as a separate course. Participants will
carry out a project during the remainder of the summer and fall
to be presented at a follow-up workshop in early January, 1992.
All local costs will be covered by the NSF grant. Participants'
home institutions will be expected to cover travel costs.

Participants will be selected on the basis of appropriate
background, potential impact at their home institution, and
institutional support for the project. In order to apply send:
your resume, including a list of computer science courses taught;
a short statement of why you want to participate and how you plan
to incorporate parallel computing into your undergraduate
curriculum; a letter from your department chair indicating
support for your project; and an indication of current or planned
laboratory support for teaching parallel computing. These
materials should be sent to:

               Chris Nevison, Director
               Parallel Computing Course
               Computer Science Department
               Colgate University
               13 Oak Drive
               Hamilton, New York 13346
               or e-mail to parcomp@colgate.edu

Applications are due by March 1, 1991.
