[comp.parallel] POSYBL

sxoinas@csi.forth.gr (Sxoinas Yannis) (03/12/91)

The last weeks, I have seen an interest in public domain distributed
programming environments.
Well, I have developed an implementation of the Linda Model in the
ethernet network and since such an interest exists, I think it is about
time to release it.
It was written having in mind speed, efficiency and easiness of programming.
If you are interested for a fancy environment that everything is
controlled with the mouse, stop reading (or start implementing enhancements).
It is intented for programmers that hate to see wasted the cpu power of
the workstation next to theirs, and have the will to do some coding for that.
Here is a somewhat more official announcement.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
		         ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSYBL
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The POSYBL (PrOgramming SYstem for distriButed appLications) (a free Linda
implementation for Unix Networks) is, as the name suggests, a prototype
implementation of the Linda Model in the Ethernet environment.
It has been tested, although not in great extent, in Sun-3 and Sun-4
workstations running SunOS 4.0 and SunOs 4.1 and in Decstations 3100
running Ultrix 2.1.

The POSYBL lacks the elegance of the commercially available Linda systems
and things such as a preprocessors and tuple inspectors or specialized
debuggers, but it has at least one advantage. It is free.
Besides that the system is fast and efficient. Also in the same program you
can use machines of different architecture and byte order.
Since the source code will be accessible to you, its subsequent development
it is and up to you.

For the first few weeks, in order to get the system please contact me
using my e-mail address:
sxoinas@csd.uch.gr,
sxoinas@csi.forth.gr,
sxoinas@ariadne.bitnet !! just one of them !!!.
I will sent you the sources and documentation as soon as I receive your mail.
If there is enough interest, I will try to convenience the network administrators
here to make it accessible via anonymous ftp.
If you have any problems or suggestions, report them directly to me, and I will
try to respond. Later on a mailing list will be created for reporting bugs
and experience.
You must understand that this system is more or less a by-product of what was
doing last semester and thus I expect bugs to exist. Also, my available time
is very limited and my respond will be as fast as possible taking into
account my time limits, but I will be very happy to hear from any of you.

				 	    HELLAS.

Note: Linda is a trademark of Sca, Inc.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope to here from you soon. Bye for now.

p.s. The reason for which I implemented this system is a sad story which
I might release to you with the source. A story about a knight, me,
fighting against a fearful dragon, bureaucracy.
