Why does my MiniScribe make a buzz saw type noise when my startup-sequence
does a Binddrivers. Is this harmful? Can it be avoided? (Please dont suggest
removing the hard drive.) It sounds like it is stepping from the park zone
back to the first cylinder. Any comments,

It the way it should be. It will happen with any disk. Good question, And I though it was just me that had this problem! I have an st251, the 1st time my amy boots, it makes a few clicks. But when I reboot after its been on a while; I get the buzz-saw from hell sound effect and pray my disk isn't being munged. This is very unnerving. Ok guys, you want more details? When a disk is first started it will move the arm to track 0 , or whatever place it considers the beginning of the disk. That's what produces the noise (depending on the disk there might other initializations that are done, too). Any comments, > > Jim Pritchett That is the Miniscribe recalibrating itself on a reset. That is harmless. My Miniscribe, my ST225, my ST238, and my ST604 all do that. (And with the Adaptec 4070 controlling the later two they seem to be slower than necessary at the reset seek to track 0.) {@_@} jdow@bix mostly Justa Dirty Old Woman?

This is very unnerving. I have a Supra 20Meg drive that I believe is a MiniScribe - at least the software format program references this. Anyway, the drive will be sitting running quietly and I'll be reading conversations, say on P-Net, when all of a sudden I'll get the buzz saw sound effect too. It will fade in, last for 15 or 20 seconds say, then fade back out. I've been wondering if this is some speed adjustment that the drive has sensed it needs to make. When the drive, on occasion, was active during this phenomenon there was no apparent read/write problem. I don't know if this sound effect is the same as the ones described by the previous posters. I am guessing that what the sound really is is a harmonic vibration of some sort that gets started. What sets it off or if it is causing any damage I have no idea. What sets it off As I said b efore the sound at reset is OK. From your description it seems that you probably responded YES to the question you get from prep about whether you want the head parked after 3 (?) seconds of inactivity. If you did, re-prep the disk (which will wipe out all that is in there) and answer NO to the same question. On a ST-251 answering YES is really stupid, since the ST-251 automatically parks the heads at shtdown. I have a Supra 30Meg drive attached to my dusty old '1000. It makes that same buzz-saw noise sometimes when the metal leg of my chair knocks against the metal filing cabinet supporting my table. I think I can rule out vibration, because I tried putting the drive on a foam pad on a separate, very heavy, very massive table about a foot away. Plus, the floor is a concrete slab. The drive still made the noise. It doesn't seem to matter how hard or soft the impact is. Does anybody have a clue about what else could cause this? By the way -- the drive is manufactured by Miniscribe. I don't know the exact model number -- the sticker is on the bottom of the case, and I don't really want to flip the drive over while it's running :) Please e-mail replies to the address above, unless you think somebody else cares. ----- Disclaimer: My ideas don't represent anybody.
