|Since my last posting re: dec micros the situation has grown very
confusing. Specifically, I have found a company that will be re-
leasing Unix for *both* the 350 and the Rainbow. It's an outfit
called Venturcom, based in Cambridge, Mass. They're product is
called Venix - a Unix tuned to the 11/23. They have they're own
kernel, v6 filesystem, v7 system calls and Sys III/v7 utilities.
They're current price is $2400 but they should be going for less
on the PRO (this includes WE license and 3 hours telephone consul-
ting). They will release it for the PRO as soon as they get a
machine in house (hopefully soon). For 8088/86 systems, they
intend to initially release it for the IBM (along with Final Word
and Logix) for an incredible $900 (see this week's MIS week), and
then later for the Rainbow. By the way, they're Unix includes
all the standard stuff including an ISO Pascal (*not* Berkeley's).
Now I really am confused! Now that I can go with Unix on either
machine, I'd love to hear from you folks out there: Should I
stick with old-reliable PDP-11, or enter the brave-new world
of IBM/Intel 8088 machines? Send me mail, and I'll summarize
for the net.|
Some of you wrote complaining of lack of information
from DEC. Again, I urge you to call 1-800-DIGITAL. The people
you get tend to vary in quality from extremely informed to typi-
cal salesperson, but even if they don't know the answer, they'll
try to get it for you. Listen, DEC's paying for it, so why not
use it?
