[net.micro] Elephants

I've been using Elephants since they first came out and have been
satisfied most of the time. (My biggest complaint to date is the
occasional bad diskette that won't format).

So, I was a bit concerned by the claim that the Alumina in my
pachydermal media (sorry) was going to sandpaper my disk heads. I
therefore called Leading Edge Products (who distribute Elephants)
and asked what they knew about the problem. Their resident expert,
Neil, said that this was the first he'd heard about it, and that
Elephants were manufactured by a very reputable, long-time-in-the-
biz firm (whose name he didn't reveal). He also said (expectedly)
that he thought they were perfectly safe and that they meet (and
exceed) ANSI standards for reliability AND material composition,
pointing out that they had a lubicrated surface and self-cleaning
inner lining. He *sounded* on the level. Just in case, how much do
single-density disk heads cost these days???

On another note, Just got a box of 12 (!) CDC diskettes mail order
    for 19.95 (plus $3.00 shipping/etc.) So far, I've only tried a
couple of them and they seem fine. Anyone else have good or bad
experience with CDC floppies? Are they Alumina-tainted? I recall
having seen some commercial stuff released thereon.
