I think this came up ages ago, but does anyone know whether it will mess
up drive alignment to stand an Amiga on it's end? This would be a Good
Thing if you want to stick a noisy fan under a desk. It would take up
a lot less space, but it may require some custom cables to make everything
reach. Has anyone got any success or failure stories in doing this?

Has anyone got any success or failure stories in doing this? No problem at all. I've run mine that way almost from the day I got it. I don't have it under the table, but I don't think there'd be much problem with cable lengths. You might want to get one of those "tower stands," or whatever they're called, to keep your Ami above the level of any spilled water. One nice thing for me is that this puts the drives just at hand level when my elbow is resting on the table. Ergonomics in action! :-) | /| | /||| /\| | John M. I put one of my drives on its side next to the monitor and got significantly worse reliability. Reliability is none too good anyway, so I gave up the nice compact set up and went back to having everything spread out right away.

That sounds like a problem specific to being next to the monitor, rather than being on the side. Many monitors put out more than enough energy to occasionally mess with a nearby floppy disk. If you're aleady having reliability problems, you could probably get just about any monitor to push you over the edge if you put your floppy right next to it. -- Dave Haynie "The 32 Bit Guy" Commodore-Amiga "The Crew That Never Rests" {ihnp4|uunet|rutgers}!cbmvax!daveh PLINK: D-DAVE H BIX: hazy "I can't relax, 'cause I'm a Boinger!"

I've had one (great sample space, huh ?) on its side since I got it at xmas and hav'nt had any problems. If I put the floppy drive on one side of the monitor I had a lot of problems, if I put it on the other side of the monitor there was none! So maybe try moving it around? You're probably right: I really had reliability problems when I had my drive sitting on top of a Tandy 1000, and Tandy is known for flouting FCC require- ments. This could be more of the same. The other symptom I had when I put the drive on its side, though, can't really be explained that way. That was in incredible increase in the volume level of the disk groinker (:->). -- Peter da Silva `-_-' peter@sugar.uu.net Have you hugged U your wolf today?

Possibly due to magnetic fields from the monitor, instead of the drive's being on end. Possibly. Bob Bales Tektronix, Inc. I help Tektronix make their instruments. My Amiga 3.5 external drive has been on its side almost since I got it 2 years ago. No problems. I have my monitor on a shelf about 6 inches above the cpu (and 5.25 drive) so it's not real close to the 3.5 drive. Its not any noisier than when flat, maybe because I put rubber feet on the side (bottom now) of the drive so it wouldn't slide around. It's on it's starboard side. The mouse can be extended via a simple 9 pin extension cord. When I had to get the hardware ready for DevCon '88 I bought joystick extension cord's from Radio Shack. They worked just great! As for the keyboard, an AT keyboard cable extension cable should work. If my memory serves me correctly, the connectors are the same.
