[net.micro] Lowdown on Hayes Co

kevin (12/07/82)

Does anyone in net-land know ANYTHING about Hayes Microcomputer Products
Company of Norcross, Ga. (Except the fact that they sell the "Micromodem"
for the Apple II.)
I have an interview with them, and would like information such as
1. What do they sell?
2. Are they pleasant people to work for?
3. Is the company solvent?
4. Any rumors or other info.

                               Many thanks,
                                kevin@unc

P.S. I need this info pretty quick. Thanks again.

Here is some information that you might find useful. I have
worked with the Hayes Smartmodem in the past and found it to
be a very well designed and programmed piece of equipment.
The company recently announced a 212A (1200/300 baud) version of
this same modem. The announcement was made in June, I believe.
As is usual, production was not to begin for several months.
In fact, the company didn't even start taking orders for
two months. The first few weeks that they took orders, they
quickly became VERY backlogged (approx. 18,000 units!).
When I called the company in the middle of October, they
were still backlogged approx. the same number of units and
were producing 250 per week. They hoped to get production up
to 1000/wk when they moved to their new facility (which, I believe
is currently being done). Most distributors are getting 50/mo.
My orders has been in since September and I am now 10th on the
list. That is the story on the Smartmodem 1200 as I know it.

When I called the company, I was immediately connected with
someone who could answer all my questions. That was quite
a suprise; usually it takes three tries before I get some-
one who can answer technical questions.

I would be insterested in hearing what the current situation
is with the 1200 after your interview. -r

Demand for Hayes 1200 still exeeds production capability.
Move to new location occurs this weekend.
(I expect next week will be a crazy house with little production while
everything gets put back together.)
