This is true, but consider that most other modems cannot be controlled at all while a conection is established (in general, you have to drop DTR to hang up the phone, and THEN you can issue commnds such as dialing a new number). 2) You can't send arbitrary characters down the line. Why not? In order to have +++ drop you into command mode, it must have a one second pause both before and after it. This doesnt happen under normal conditions. (I was surprised at how well this system worked out. My only complaint is that +++ should result in an "OK" message even if the hayes was already in command mode.) 3) characters are lost when in command mode. Yes, but see (1). BillW
