[comp.sys.amiga.tech] SPEAK:

I'm having a problem accessing the speak: device in direct phoneme mode.
According to the 1.3 Enhancer Manual the option "/a1" should bypass the trans-
lator sending the "string" directly to the narrator device.
When I:
        "1>echo > speak:opt/r/p130/s125/d1 "helllo leesa""
The amiga (a1000) outputs: "hello Lisa" (roughly :-> ).

But when I:
           "1>echo > speak:opt/r/p130/s125/d1/a1 "kumpyuw5ter" (<< RKM ex.)
The amiga output is silent.

If I repeat the previous line without the "/a1",
The amiga outputs: "compuIVEter" (my caps).

If my reading of the RKM narrator device section and the enhancer manual is
correct, the "5" should have indicated a stress on syllable without the
pronunciation of the word "fIVE" in the middle.

Any ideas? CATS?

Thanx!!

You must use all caps when in direct phoneme mode.

echo > speak:opt/r/p130/s125/d1/a1 "KUMPYUW5TER"

will work. The '5' will not become 'five', but will work as expected.

Sorry if the RKM was unclear.

You need to supply phonetic input in upper case:

            "1>echo > speak:opt/r/p130/s125/d1/a1 "KUMPYUW5TER"

works fine for me.
