There was at one time a suggested NS part which was *supposed* to be
equivalent to the 8520 in this application.  I have unfortunately
misplaced that scrap of paper, does anyone out there remember the
reference (including whether or not it is/was valid)?

This seems like an odd way to avoid "surge" problems.  Seems like you'd
be more interested in clipping the head off the surge than in deadening
the signal by N.  Not sure myself, but that just doesn't sound right.
