[net.micro] Info wanted: Heath/Zenith ZVM-121 video display

crs (01/13/83)

The current Heathkit catalog lists a (Zenith?) ZVM-121 "High-resolution
Monochrome Video Display" for $139.95.

The catalog description:

Use with Z-100, most popular computers: Accepts direct EIA
monochrome video, gives performance comparable with higher-
priced units. Green 25 x 80 CRT display is easy on the eyes,
has excellent character definition. Select 40- or 80-char-
	acter lines....

As you can see the catalog listing is not highly informative, hence:

1. Has anyone had any experience with this unit? Is it worth the money?

2. Are there comparable units available in this price range? What?

3. How good is its actual performance? Its reliability? etc?

4. The catalog doesn't actually say so but I assume that this is a video
monitor rather than a made-over TV set. I assume for example, that
direct video is the only thing it accepts, not modulated video on some
VHF channel. How many ( and which ) personal computers provide ( non-
modulated ) video out with no hacking? A reasonable amount of hacking?

5. Can anyone recommend a better monitor in this price range (say < $150)?
I know poly paks has a Motorola listed for $89 but I called Motorola
and they sent me a manual for the given model number which, apparently,
uses a horizontal scanning frequency of about 18kHz rather than the
    more common 15.75kHz.

Is there anyone out there from Heath/Zenith who could send complete details
about the unit?

Thanks in advance; please reply by mail:
