FISCHER@rutgers.arpa (01/23/83)
From: Ron <FISCHER@rutgers.arpa> Were announced. A very rough rundown: 2e All info is base configuration unless noted. Has a full ASCII keyboard, also includes 4 cursor keys and open/closed "Apple" keys (the "Apple" keys are connected to paddle buttons and could therefore be used as meta prefix keys in a terminal emulator). Display is same resolution as the old Apple 2 (i.e. 24 by 40 characters in text mode), but text modes now have lowercase. There is a special slot on the motherboard for an 80 column expansion card, I have heard $50 and $200 quoted as the price for it. Unit comes with 64k (configured like a language card). Maximum expandability is claimed to be 128k, but no word on how it's done. Otherwise it is an Apple 2, almost completely compatible with the older machine. There was a unit at a local store that a friend tried out. Apparently all of the regular programs worked. The only one that didn't was, of course, the one we were sent to check out: Terrapin Logo. Oh well, the Apple 2e is a fabulous improvement on the Apple 2. Nearly all of the deficiencies have been repaired. The price of the new Apple: $1350. Lisa Covered in recent Infoworld. It is what we all heard, but the final configuration is a little better pricewise. 68000 processor, bitmap display (Apparently not 1000k by 800 resolution), mouse, 1.2 meg floppy storage, 5 meg hard disk. I heard this second hand and found the price/configuration very very competitive at $9995. Could someone who has the Infoworld issue very handy please summarize. If no one else gets a chance I'll eventually find a copy of the magazine.... No word on the home version of the Lisa yet (MacIntosh). I hope it's a dynabook equivalent in function if not size.
