[comp.sys.amiga.tech] Request for info on fax specs

TEETER@HUMBER.BITNET (Doug Teeter) (08/29/89)

Does anyone have any specs on fax machines (signaling, protocol, image format)?

Are there any fax cards available for the amiga? Any planned?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I made a similar request a while back on comp.graphics for fax format
and specs. I received a couple of messages suggesting I check out the
references on engineering for Standards and yes, I found some not-very-useful
information there (no clear listing of specs or algorithms, but rather
a technical discussion, which usually I have no problem deciphering, but
this time, no go...). Our small library may not have had the best references
At the same time, I received no less than 30 messages asking me to pass
on the information when I found out. A LOT of people want to know about this
I would like to see Fax conversion tools and/or boards for the Amiga. Except
for transmittal of scanned documents, Faxes are a rotten idea (people blanch
when I say this). My rationale is as follows, again, with the exception of
scanned images, most people create the document on a word processor or with
a computer drawing program (at least in all the work environments I've been
in). Then they print it out. Then they take it to the Fax machine. They
'scan' it into the machine. It pops out the other end. The recipient
retypes it into a word processor or redraws it in, for example, AutoCAD.
A terrible waste of time and duplication of effort. The file should go
through a modem to the recipient's machine in situations as described above.
However, for circumstances where a fax is appropriate, I'd like to be able
to convert an ILBM image or whatever to fax format and transmit it. There
are many boards for the IBM world which accomplish this. - JP

You may want to ask on comp.protocols.iso.??? about the FAX protocols.
I can get you the ISO standard number(s); I will post them shortly.
