I don't know if this will help anybody else out there, but I finally got my FRANCES working again. The connection between the DRAM controller pin 30 and the FRANCES PAL pin 13 was open. This was causing FRANCES not to work with the operating system even though all the RAM testers I tried said the memory was fine (except RamTest). Also, I should mention that at least 2 of the PALS I received with my LUCAS board were flakey. It used to need about 10 minutes to "warm up" before it got reasonably stable with ANY 74X74 in U9. When I replaced PAL U7 with one I'd burned myself the thermal problem went away. When FRANCES came along with a new U7, it worked great also. The other bad PAL was either U4 or U5. It was consistently crashing the machine when I'd drag an object about in a workbench window. This also went away when I installed new ones. My LUCAS board was in the 700th range. Maybe some other bad PALS got out in that series. -- Fred Hamilton Any views, comments, or ideas expressed here Harris Semiconductor are entirely my own. Even good ones. Santa Clara, CA
