From: Ron <FISCHER@rutgers.arpa> Phil, Jerry Pournelle's column is very interesting in because it is what you say: casual, not too loaded with facts, etc. His column contrasts very sharply with the general style of Byte magazine. You're right, there is a dichotomy, but is it bad? I think not. Mr. Pournelle seems to try to make you understand what he thinks and feels without the pretention of absolutes, which you find in the typical review article. For me, he simply provides a very human viewpoint to help further evaluate a product. There has been alot of print lately devoted to the dehumanizing effects of heavy interaction with computers. Perhaps you would get the most information content per gram of magazine if JEP's column was changed. In the end however you'd lose a valuable piece of information, how someone felt about something.
