[net.micro] Jerry Pournelle's User's Column in Byte

Phil,
Jerry Pournelle's column is very interesting in because it is what you
say: casual, not too loaded with facts, etc. His column contrasts very sharply
with the general style of Byte magazine. You're right, there is a dichotomy,
but is it bad? I think not. Mr. Pournelle seems to try to make you
understand what he thinks and feels without the pretention of absolutes, which
you find in the typical review article.

For me, he simply provides a very human viewpoint to help further
evaluate a product.

There has been alot of print lately devoted to the dehumanizing effects
of heavy interaction with computers. Perhaps you would get the most
information content per gram of magazine if JEP's column was changed. In the
end however you'd lose a valuable piece of information, how someone felt about
something.
