Jerry Pournelle is hardly "non-scientific". I believe he has a graduate-level engineering degree (I think it's a PhD) and I know he worked a number of years in the aerospace industry. Faulkner is probably not interested in writing in Byte. Neither is George Orwell. But I'd sure like to read a column by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Martin Minow decvax!minow

Jerry Pournelle's doctorate is in political science from the University of Washington, and a friend of mine with the same degree says that his dissertation was extremely derivative and contained no new thoughts at all.
