[comp.sys.amiga.tech] 2000 won't boot if modem is on ?????

duncant@mbunix.mitre.org (Thomson) (04/04/90)

My Amiga 2000 won't boot up if the modem is powered up. The 2000
has the 1.2 ROMs, and I am booting AmigaDos 1.3. The modem is a
plain vanilla Supra external modem. The problem began, as I recall,
when I first installed my Microboticws HardFrame controller and hard
disk drive. It seems that something in the Hardframe controller
gets annoyed if the modem is there when it tries to set itself up.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? I can, or course, just get around it
by switching off the modem, booting, then switching the modem back on,
but it is starting to bug me.

Also, on rare occasions if I power up my printer while the 2000 is already is
running, it will lock up the keyboard, requiring a re-boot to clear the problem.
Anyone else ever experience a similar wierdness?

Believe me, you are not alone...I have a GVP hardcard and a Supra 2400 external
modem and I have to make sure the thing is turned off before booting...It's a
real pain since I run a BBS and would like my machine to automatically reload
the BBS if the power should go out...

I know at least in part what the problem is...I had a dumb terminal hooked up
at 9600 baud for a while and whenever I booted, and my startup-sequence hit
bindrivers, all sorts of neat "Debugging" type text came up...things like
LOADENVEC gREAD ALLOC and a bunch of other stuff...about a half a screen full
by then my hard drive had taken over and was fully active... I got to thinking
about it and I started looking at my SCSI.DEV driver in my expansion dir and
what do you know,...each of the keywords that had been displayed was encoded
in the device driver...they weren't in BINDDRIVERS and so I assumed that
GVP echoed some "STATUS" type information at startup and that was that..

Well I can only presume that when the modem is on, this information goes out
and since the modem being 2400 baud is not able to handle the data, the
serial device has a fit and the system hangs...

I too am using KS1.2 and WB1.3....

Any one in CBM Ville have any suggestions???

I called GVP and they said KS1.3 would fix it..

I personally believe that they could remove the echo effect from their code and
that would fix it..
