Is it possible, or did the tech you talked with indicate that the 9 flash sequence could be a combination of the sequences you listed? Out of 1-6 and 8, you could have 8+1, 6+3 and 5+4. Could it be a software failure, or the hd interface failing to interpret a message from the software? You might try running a diagnostic program such as XOPER just to see if something weird is going on with the system. Robert Brown RDBROWN@UALR.BITNET

I'm planning to buy a hard drive for my 500 this summer, unless some financial windfall allows me to get a 3000. I have heard many things about many drives, and the majority of it conflicts. I would like an economical system consisting of a controller (hopefully with space for about 2MB RAM in the future) and a 40-50Meg HD. What I want to know is which HD's should I avoid?? OK, don't everyone shout Seagate all at once. It seems they need a little work. I plan to watch and see what they do about their current problems, and I've heard the new revision (157N-1 or whatever) has fewer problems. Quantum is supposed to be very nice, but it's kinda expensive to this strugglig college student. (however, i may end up paying for quality) What other HD's are especially good/especially cheap? (cheap!=bad) Also, the question of controllers arises. Which one should I get? I've heard the Trump Card is slow, but it's also low-end. Who makes a good, inexpensive, memory-expandable SCSI controller for the 500? One final note: Although I don't want a slow HD or controller, I'm no speed demon either. To put it in terms of my car, I drive a 10-year-old Toyota, but it's not necessarily a slow one.... :-) :-) Another final note: (Is it OK if I have two? Noone complaining? Good.) I am looking for a little more speed than my stock 500 gives me. I have been watching the discussions about 14Mhz mods and am very interested. I have also entertained the idea of an 881 add-on (I've only heard rumors of this possibility, but it'd be nice considering the number of Mandlebrots and other fractals I've been generating.) I have also heard tell of a card that already gives the 500 a 14Mhz 68k and an 881. Is this true? How much does it cost? Just a few (hundred) questions from a 3000-dazzled student. Thanks in advance (ooooh! I hate that phrase!) //// Disclaimer: THe opinions expressed above are not my own, but //// the property of some higher-up power, to which I am only a tool. //// \\\\//// Greg Harp greg@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu \\XX//
