According to the GAS manual (Gnu assembler), GAS uses about 10 times the final object file size for internal storage while assembly. It also says that "the C compiler" [GCC, I suppose, because of the context], uses about 100 times the final object file size for internal storage. -- Leonard (Check out section 8.1 Design of the GAS manual)
