[comp.sys.amiga.tech] Bad 8620

david@starsoft.UUCP (Dave Lowrey) (07/05/90)

I recently had a "sick" amiga on my hands. All of it's troubles were
caused by faulty 8620 CIA chips.

I thought that it might be of help to others if I posted the symptoms.
That way, if you had these symptoms, all you need to do is replace
the 8620(s) (at $20.00 a piece) instead of paying $50.00 an hour to
get it repaired....

SYMPTOMS OF A BAD 8620 (Not all of them, of course)

TOD CLOCK FREEZES - I could set the clock with the 'setclock' command, but
once set, the time never changed. Other symptoms of this are that
Dmouse won't blank the screen. 'double clicks' can occur, even if you
wait two hours between clicks! Programs that depend on the timestamp
of a file will act strangely.

SYSTEM WON'T BOOT & CAPS LOCK LIGHT FLASHES CONSTANTLY - Self explanitory

CROSS-DOS HANGS - It must use one of the timers on a CIA. The "normal"
access to AmigaDos formatted disks worked fine.

DRAKKHEN (the game) WON'T PLAY MUSIX OR SOUND F/X - This happened the same
time I had the above mentioned CrossDos problem.

ACCESS TO FLOPPY DRIVES WONT WORK CORRECTLY - Different symptoms.

The above problems were re-created by swapping around 3 different bad 8620
chip to the different sockets.

There are, I am sure, many more problems that could be caused by a bad
8620.
