Thanks to joe & adam @ CBM dan @ ucsb et al for the help! It was late when I put some ZIP mem in my 3000 and I misread the numbers on the board and just put them in in what was to me at the time a logical sequence. The correct sequence is to "carefully read the C8?? labels on the board" then insert the chips in sequence C850, C851, ... That is in the docs but there are U??? numbers on the board near each socket too and the C8?? labels are not evenly spaced or highlighted or have neon signs w/ arrows saying "place chip here, bozo!" on them (;-} Anyway, after taking the beast apart again, and repositiong the chips all is well.
