[comp.sys.amiga.tech] Using ScanLab with A2232

scot@amigash.UUCP (Scot L. Harris) (07/21/90)

Having recently purchased one of CBM's A2232 multi-port boards (ok, so I just
picked it up today!) I have a couple of questions. (naturally)

My set up includes a JX-100 scanner from ASDG as well as the standard Modem
and direct connections to my Xenix system and my old A1000. I was pleasently
suprised when the software provided by CBM allowed a default port to be
set in a preferences menu. This allowed all software looking for the internal
port that comes standard to run normally with out any additional modifications.
In my case this was GREAT since I use several different terminal programs
depending on which system I dial up. In addition the AmigaTerm program
provided with the A2232 allows me to connect to the two systems I have
connected directly (the Xenix system and the A1000). So far so good.
Now I want to bring my scanner on line and whoops! It wants to use the
default port also. This means that I would have to go into preferences
every time and change the default port number to the one the scanner is on
and when done switch it back to my modem so my uucp calls can be made at
night. This is not really acceptable.

So if somebody from CBM or ASDG or someone that has solved this problem
could respond via EMAIL with a method of getting the scanlab software to
work on a designated port with out messing up all the other programs I would
appreciate it.

BTW: I found the A2232 board to be very clean, no jumper wires that I could
see and the software installation was very straight forward. Good job CBM!
Also the JX-100 scanner by ASDG is another quality product that comes with
high recommendations.

One last question: I noticed the A2232 had an 8520 chip as well as several
6551 chips. From the schematics it looks like the 6551 chips are the
serial port uarts (one for each port), but what is the 8520 for? I thought
that was normally used for parrallel port interfaces (at least the last time
I played with one that was what it was used for). Also how much of the
ram that is on board is used for the 6502 code and how much for buffers?

Again thanks in advace and please email if possible. I will probably
catch any replys to the net since my feed has just come back on line but
you never know.
