Hi. I'm currently running a point on my Amiga using the following software: Caller - Trapdoor 1.50 Mailer - Chameleon Editor Tosser - Fastpoint I prefer Trapdoor over Welmat as Trapdoor uses ZedZap (Zmodem) which is much faster than the Xmodem packets that Welmat uses. I also was unable to get the password option on Welmat to work and I don't like not having a session password for my mail. I do have one problem with Trapdoor. It didn't work with my Sears Hayes-compat 1200 modem. It also didn't work with the Practical Peripherals PM2400SA MNP 5 modem. It works quite well with the generic 2400 I'm using, and with an HST which I've suckered a friend into lending to me (Thanks John Preston!). I perfer Chameleon over RMB as it's quicker to get around in. Plus, it's interface is HIGHLY customizable, especially in that I've integrated Trapdoor and Fastpoint into Chameleon instead of running Trapdoor, Faspoint, and then RMB. I also have had problems with changing areas in RMB. It would forget what area I was just in when I pressed 'A' to change areas. And, RMB would crash frequently when I ran it in NTSC mode on my 1-meg Agnus. (I run a PAL mod of 665 by 270.) I'm waiting to get the new Fastpoint (version 1.2) which is suppose to fix a problem with the Kludge (something to do with FIDO message protocol -- if I follow the discussion in AMY_POINT correctly...) I've been working on being a point for over a month now. It's taken a LOT of sweat and frustration. First you need a BOSS node. That's someone who is a FIDO sysop on his system who will set up a POINTNET (a fake FIDO NET address) and then establish you as a point. Once you have a pointnet and a point number, you set up your AREAS.BBS file which lists your directories for each echo you receive, the offical echo TAG name, and the boss node. An example line I use is: MAIL:amy_point/ AMY_POINT 3612/42 When I call my BOSS node, Trapdoor automagically tells 3612/42 that I am 3612/42.57 and who I am, and what my password is. My BOSS node is an IBM AT clone, running DBridge 1.30 and QuickBBS 2.64. Being a Sub-Sysop, I set up the POINTNET. I created the arbitrary net address of 11235 (Can you say Fibbonacci (sp?)) and created a St. Louis-style Point node list with my node, 57, in it. Don't worry if this has lost you. Your BOSS would normally do this for you. I set up the areas that I wanted to be sent to me via an esoteric process known as AREAFIX. I also set up Lharc as my mail archiver. The setup is finally stable and I'm pleased with it. Instead of spending two hours online having to reply off the top of my head, I can spend free time offline repying at my leisure. Since I've gone this far, I guess I'll go ahead and volunteer to field questions about being a point setup. I know there are other point users here, as I've seen their names and tag lines in the echos. -- John M. One comment - Very soon Welmat will be using ZedZap as well, and then at that
time Mike will start to work on other more interesting things. Stay tuned to
the WELMAT and AMY_POINT conferences for more info.
If you would like to get involved in Welmat tool Development, just send a
note - There are always great little things we can get going.

Other personal preference (Since this is one of the great things about being a
point, that you chose your own environment): I personally prefer the Juliet
message system to eithor RMB or Chameleon (And, yes, I worked with the previous
two, for about a year each). Juliet is more of an 'all in one' package that
includes a very fast Importer/Exporter so you don't have to deal with 'kludges'
and the like that you have to with Confmail/Fastpoint/Ommm. It's author
(Gregory Kritsch {atronx!tirith!ggk}) I have also found a lot more receptive to
suggestions than the authors of RMB (No longer involved with Fidonet) or
Chameleon (Always working on other aspects (Clist) and not having put out an
upgrade to CE for quite some time)
