[comp.sys.amiga.tech] Midget Racer!

david@dogmelb.dog.oz.au (David Le Blanc) (12/13/90)

I have an A500 (with an A590 and a SCSI harddisk) and have been looking
for an accelerator. I gave up 68010's as a joke. Now I have just
recently heard of the existence of a gadget called the Midget Racer.
(I havent been looking that hard :)

Does anyone have any info on this? What I mainly want to know is:

1) Is it available in Australia? (Price?)
2) Is it a 68030/68882 or an '020.? (or 81/82 optional?)
3) Does it take 32bit ram? (optional? at what extra cost?)
4) Does it have an MMU? (optional?)
5) Does it or its 32bit RAM conflict with the A590's internal RAM?
(I ask because the gvp, and spirit's of this world conflict with
    the a590's RAM.)
6) Is it internal to the 500 or on a passthru bus?
7) Can toys such as SetCPU (1.6!) work with its 32bit ram? (an MMU?)
(this is moot if there is no mmu or 32bit ram..)

Thanks in advance for any info.

68020 at 7.16MHz and 68881 at 16MHz.

no

I am sorry I don't know the rest since the original Midget Racer is
outdated and a new one called Mega Midget Racer is avail.
It is a completely new and high-tech design, nothing to do with the
original one except the name, using the 68030 at speed from 20,25,to
33MHz with optional 68882 at the 030 speed.

A 32bit ram daughter board is available as optional. Mega Midget Racer
plugs into the 68000 socket and the 68000 resits on the board, and it
can be brought back to 68000 mode with software or hardware switch.
A static ram cache is avail. and you can put ROM kickstart images in it
to speed up access.

Board uses a lot of surface mount parts. It'll work with A500, A2x00,
and with some mod. A1000.

This issue of AmigaWorld has a good review about it.

The price starts at $600 - $700 and up depends on configurations.

I'm not related to the product and just seems to know this much.

I'm also not related to CSA which manufactures it.

Bye,
David

It's available via mail-order in Amigaworld.

>2) Is it a 68030/68882 or an '020.? (or 81/82 optional?)

The Midget Racer is 020 with room for the FPU. The MegaMidgetRacer is 030,
again with room for an 68882.

>3) Does it take 32bit ram? (optional? at what extra cost?)

Yes. There are two routes. First there is a 512k Static RAM board. This
is great for putting the ROM in for acclerated speed. Second, there is
a 32bit RAM board available. The board for the 2000 takes ZIPs. The
older board for the 500 takes 256x4 or 1024x4.

>4) Does it have an MMU? (optional?)

The 030 version has the MMU native to the processor. The 020 version has
no provisions for an MMU.

No, the memory fall outside of the 'normal' Amiga 9-meg address range.

>6) Is it internal to the 500 or on a passthru bus?

Both the MR and the MMR (020 and 030 respectively) sit in the 68000's
position on the motherboard. This is one accelerator that fits in
the 1000, 500, and the 2000. The 68000 plugs into the {M}MR, thus
giving you 68000 mode when needed.

> (this is moot if there is no mmu or 32bit ram..)

For the MMR 030, definitely. I can't say for the 020 MR.
