My A3000 just arrived late last week, and I noticed something odd in the free memory display on the top line of the WB 2.0 screen. Basically, I open a drawer, look at it, close it, and the free fast RAM (other) doesn't return to the value it had before I opened the drawer. It comes up with a smaller number; it appears that my machine is losing memory! Here is an example sequence of actions from power up: Action Graphics mem Other mem --------------------- ------------ ---------- Power up 945480 248640 Open Sys 2.0 934400 237512 Close " " 945480 248088 (Lost!) Open Work: 941872 242904 Close Work: 945480 247032 (Lost!) Run NComm, quit, return to just WB open 945480 240680 (Lost!) As you can see, the graphics mem returns to its original value, but the 'other' mem is reduced. Some of that may be taken up by extra system things being loaded (serial port hander, buffers, perhaps?), but just opening and closing WB drawers should not result in any lost memory. In playing around with the system, I have returned to just the WB screen and found that i had less than 100K other mem free! Is this an actual problem (i.e., after a long day of windowing around, will programs refuse to run/crash because they don't have enough memory? Thanks, Mike Brindley brindley@ece.orst.edu
