[comp.sys.amiga.tech] Help -- Lamar Exterminator Virus -- coolcapture vector

dale@sparky.IMD.Sterling.COM (Dale Miller) (01/29/91)

A student in my wife's 3rd grade classroom brought in an Amiga game to use
on our Amiga 1000.

The disk had the "lamar exterminator" virus on it.

The virus quickly spread to the other disk. Using VirusX_4.01 I discovered
and removed the virus from the disk.

However, my wife brought home one of the disk and I loaded it into our
Amiga 3000. I have used VirusX_4.01 with workbench 2.0 and it says that
everything is clean. However, when I load VirusX_4.01 with workbench 1.3
it gives me a warning about the coolcapture vector saying that there may
be a virus in RAM.

When I load "VirusX_4.01 -r" I can keep the message about the coolcapture
vector from appearing as the 4.01 README says it will.

My questions:

  1. How serious is the lamar exterminator virus?
  2. Can it affect a hard drive?
  3. Does VirusX_4.01 with workbench 1.3 normally give the coolcapture
      vector message?
  4. Is there a newer release of VirusX?
  5. Does VirusX check the hard drive?

My wife now knows how and why to use VirusX. I expect a phone call tonight
from the father of the student who still has the virus.

Thank You, Dale Miller

Pretty serious. It will destroy files.

I don't believe so.

It does if you have "r" option on SetPatch. Note that if you're not using
RAD: then normally you don't need the r option, which will also make
VirusX stop complaining.

"rsn" - a few weeks probably.

No. VirusX watches for viruses in RAM. If a virus gets loaded FROM
the hard drive, then VirusX will notice (if it's a virus it recognizes),
but searching the entire hard drive for a virus could take many minutes.
If you want to do this, look at "KV" that came with VirusX_4.0.lzh.
