I must agree with Alonzo's sentiments per the HP28S, but it is *probably* a bit too much for a 12-year-old... to either need, or to have to worry about. I know I'd be a bit worried going to jr. high school with a $150-200 calculator in my backpack! You might want to consider TI 55-III; it is [marginally] programmable, and the book that comes with the calculator has lots of useful examples, including programming the quadratic formula [a perenial(sp) favorite of jr high math]. This calculator should be something like $35-45 [$45 is a BIT high... look for better price if this is all you can find!] I am not up on the price of the HP27, or the HP42 - but both of these are excellent calculators. I would just consider carefully before sending a $100+ calculator into the public school system... Hope this helps, and happy hunting...
