I concur. However, I think creation of a new newsgroup would be more appropriate than renaming this one. Most of the traffic through here consists of HP28 related messages. However, the current life expectancy (with the new HP around the corner) really doesn't warrant an entire newsgroup dedicated to the 28. I'd say that comp.sys.hph is a much better choice since most 28 owners (including myself) are interested in HP's other calculators and future calculators as well. I originally found out about comp.sys.handhelds by posting in comp.sys.hp. A comp.sys.hph would be more direct and would eliminate the non-interesting stuff for the HP owners (Sharp, Casio :-)) as well. However, hph is sort of vague. I'd say hpcalc is a better extension.

I think that the name of the newsgroup should stay the same... I have found out some interesting things about other handhelds (CASIO, SHARP, etc.) by listening here. There was an interesting discussion of the merits/downfalls of the Atari Portfolio a while back, and the information I received here convinced me to stick to my HP. The group is taking care of itself. Leave it alone. If you wish to discuss other calculators, feel free to do so! No one is going to yell at you for it. I don't thiuk that there is anything stopping owners of other handhelds from posting to comp.sys.handhelds, but they don't appear to be posting. If a name change is needed then I think it should be something like: comp.sys.handhelds.hp which would put it under the 'handheld' newsgroup. Or comp.sys.hp.handheld which would put it under the 'hp' newsgroup. I prefer the comp.sys.handheld.something name because that could then be extended to other handhelds as needed. -- john.Latala@Waterloo.NCR.COM

I would like to see more postings about HP's older machines. Does anyone out there still write programs for the HP 41, 65, 67, 71, or 75? Am I the only one with an interest in these machines? Steve Nichols ccsteve@ucdavis.ucdavis.edu

I prefer leaving it the way it is and doing something to encourage users of non-hp machines to join in. Randy Stockberger randys@hp-pcd.cv.com

OK, if some people are thinking about creating a new newsgroup (about 50% of the replies seem to favor this), then someone with knowledge of this process should hold a vote. Although I am not really in favor of creating/renaming to an hp handheld group, I think a vote at this point is worthwhile to keep this discussion from tying up the newsgroup. The vote should settle the disagreements for a while. So, does anybody out there who knows the "proper" way want to conduct the vote? -- Christopher Lishka 608-262-4485 "Somebody said to me, `But the Beatles were Wisconsin State Lab. of Hygiene antimaterialistic.' Does anyone still have the notes discussing the Portfolio? I have noticed that there doesn't seem to be any advertising for it (I see lots of Wizard ads)? Is there anyone who is trying to write any applications/design hardware for the portfolio? I have just sold my 41CX + acessories, and I want to get somthing along the lines of the Portfolio. Yes, I've written a couple of small applications for the Portfolio. It's VERY easy to do so. Mine were developed in Microsoft C on an AT&T 6300 Plus and just downloaded to the Portfolio. ----------------------------------------------------- Michael Connick mec@mtfmi.ATT.COM 201-957-3057 AT&T Bell Labs MT 3F-113 (Dept. 79151)
