Ok. I have been reading all the poop on the new HP calculator, and it appears that I will have to get one (when the funds become available, that is). I do have a question about the serial communications port. I see that that there is a PC interface kit and a MacKit. The problem is that some of us have something OTHER than PCs and Macs (shudder). I read something about the 48sx using XMODEM, so can any computer/comm program that supports XMODEM talk the the 48? Looking at the ready-to- download programs posted here, there appear to be some simple ascii codes to designate a special HP character. Where does the translation take place? If it happens on the MacPC end, then a whole bunch of us are SOL. If the 48 translates then we are o.k. What is the story? Is there hope for us non-comformists? thanks for listening... +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Matt Nelson, Physics Dept., University of California, Irvine, CA 92717 (714)856-6496 internet: nelson@psroot.ps.uci.edu bitnet: mnelson@uci +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+

The 48 uses Kermit, not XMODEM. Objects can be transferred to/from a PC in binary or ASCII, with the 48 having a translation option to translate its special characters into common PC characters, like \<< for the program quote or \-> for the right arrow. In short, any PC will do.

I've been using an HP-48SX with a (shhh!) 1040ST from Atari for several months now. Any Kermit package works fine. (Try Flash, Uniterm, etc.) Someone also asked about the merits of buyinhg the cable without the PC disk. By all means, buy the disk. It has some excellent HP-48SX applications on it that you won't want to miss. (Like printing graphics on your Epson or PCL printer.) Excuse the typos. I hate vi. rayde@hpcvia.COM
