[comp.sys.handhelds] HP-28 Rumours?

johnt@mead.UUCP (John Townsend) (08/14/90)

Would anyone happen to know whether HP is planning a sequel to the
HP-28S? Like, with expandability, user ports, and the like? Or would
that step on the toes of the HP-48? Heck, maybe HP thinks that they
put everything anybody could possibly want in the HP-28, and that
expandability is a waste of effort. I bought my HP-28C (with its 2K
of memory) only a couple months before the HP-28S was rolled out, and
would like to avoid getting burned again. Anyone know how to hotwire
an expansion port onto one of these puppies?

John Townsend asks if HP is planning a "sequel" to the HP28. John, the HP48SX
*is* the sequel to the HP28. I firmly believe that the "clamshell" calculator
case is a dead issue for the present at HP. According to talks by HP folks
at the Chicago HP Handheld Users Conference in June, the clamshell case was
a mixed blessing, with people either loving or hating it. Being that the HP48
is virtually a superset of the HP28S, I can't see it not being considered the
HP28 sequel.
Bill Wickes gave an excellent talk on the evolution of the HP18C/28C/28S/
48SX machines at the Chicago Conference, lasting about 90 minutes with some
great slides showing prototypes and HP48 versions at various stages of
development. This talk included much on the hardware as well as the software.
Later that evening on June 2nd, he followed up at our "informal" meeting
with another long talk on various topics, including a detailed discussion on
the HP48 Vectored ENTER function (which someone recently was asking about)
as well as the status of the HP internal software development procedure and
tools, and the potential for HP to release internal development information
in some practical and supportable way. I am still willing to make copies of
all the presentations associated with the conference and peripheral meetings.
They are still 15 bucks for the 16 hours of material on two T-160 8-hour VHS
videocassettes (which includes postage). Maybe this one can eventually get
a sales award from Billboard Magazine - we're up to thirty copies dis-
tributed so far.
