[comp.sys.handhelds] HP 48 Programmer's Reference Manual

jpser@cup.portal.com (John Paul Serafin) (09/18/90)

The long awaited HP 48 Programmer's reference manual is now available
(e.g. EduCalc (800) 677-7001, Stock #2289, $19.95 + shipping, CA tax, etc)
.
The pages are good, thick, stock but the book is NOT spiral bound.
.
458 of the 504 pages are devoted to the command dictionary. The rest
are tables of:
         error and status messages
         units
         system flags
         reserved variables
.
The commands are in alphabetical order in the following format:
.
. Top of page v

For example, DECR on page 94:

  DECR Decrement Command

      Level 1                  ->             Level 1
-----------------------------------------------------------------

       'name'                  ->            X decrement
-----------------------------------------------------------------
.
.
Use: Decrements by 1 the value of the real number in name, storing the
new value Xdecrement back into name and returning Xdecrement to level 1.
.
  Affected by Flags: None
.
Remarks: The contents of name must be a real number.
.
Example: If 35.7 is stored in A, 'A' DECR returns 34.7
.
  Related Commands: INCR

Sometimes the Remarks take half a page or more, a complete table of
characters is included after NUM, and functions that are actually relations
have illustrated branch cuts. WSLOG is documented (with a few discrepancies
from the table in Donnelly's "The HP 48 Handbook". BTW, these books are
complementary. The main redundancies are the stack diagrams. There are
occasional references to page numbers in the Owner's Manual for more
information.
.
There is a SYSEVAL for ROM version, but it sure ain't easy to remember:
#30794h SYSEVAL
(I tried it, it works :-), and the stack is preserved) (but don't blame me if
yours doesn't work or you mistype it)
.
A minor gripe: even though the pages for RAND and RDZ are over half
empty, the algorithms for for random number generation and seed generation
are not given.
.
All the above is based on a quick glance through the manual
.

Where does it tell you which menu each command is in? You still have to
use you old manuals for understanding how best to get around if you not
familiar with that command. Hint! Get a copy of the HP28s manual, you'll
be miles ahead of using this book. It is so much better at relating the
RPL it isn't funny.
