[comp.sys.handhelds] Proposal for FAQ list

jurjen@cwi.nl (Jurjen NE Bos) (09/26/90)

I thought it might be a good idea to start making a FAQ (Frequently asked
questions) list for the HP28C, HP28S, and HP48SX.
We can post this list every month or so.

Here are my first few lines:
- HP28C: to find out the version execute HEX then #A SYSEVAL.
It will be 1BB or 1CC.
- the version of your HP28S is 2CC
- HP48SX: to find out the version type ON-D, Backspace, EVAL.
type ON-C to get back to the real world.
- type ON-x as follows: press ON, press x, release ON, release x.
- HP48: flag 19 determines whether 2D makes a vector or a complex number
- HP48: other flags (34, 33, 62)
- HP48: Vectored ENTER means that \GaENTER and \GbENTER are executed as
follows: (long story)
- split a matrix in rows by using \Gs-
- build a matrix from rows by using \Gs+
- Your calculator is very accurate, but not infinite. Don't expect
	'SQ(\v/2)' to be exactly 2.
- Press \pi (or \Gp?) \->NUM to get pi. Same for e, i, MINR, MAXR.
- Use \->ASC to post binary objects.
- Mind the values of your symbolic, constant, function evaluation flags.
- (explanation of infinite result, and like flags)
- (table of \ codes, following the 48 manual)
- (list of archive sites)

Everything is open for discussion.
Any comments? Bob, Alonzo, Jake, Wlodek, Eric, anybody else?

I think it's a great idea to have a frequently-asked-question list. More and
more folks seem to be getting onto this area, so a regular posting of the
list is prudent. Speaking of the ROM version of the HP48, (and I think this
was posted earlier, but) the HP48 Programmers Reference Manual also men-
tions that you can execute #30794h SYSEVAL to see the version number in a
string "HPHP48-n" where n is A, B, etc.

The list looks good. Possible additions would be:
1. Telephone numbers for EduCalc and Elec Tek
2. Names, addresses, and meeting times and places of user groups (perhaps a
separate posting of its own?)

I think that a FAQ list is an excellent idea. I have several
questions I have hesitated to ask because I know they will
waste people's time. Some of my questions are covered in
the proposed FAQ list, but here are some more:
1) Is there a list of ftp libraries? I have found some
by perusing a few dozen previous messages, but a
   complete list would be helpful.
2) Is there such a thing as a delta-manual for 28 to
48 transition (I read the recent message about Dr.
Wickes' book on transitions, and I plan to get that,
but a short snappy book on the differences between
the 28 and the 48 would be helpful on its own).
3) Most of the programs I have seen listed here and on
the one ftp library I have perused have been, well,
   more programmer-oriented than mathematical-end-user
oriented. I have about 50 or so programs which are
more mathematical, so they may be of less interest
to the people reading this forum. I know of the
existence of some first-rate special functions software
written for the 28 by Dr. Henry Thacher. Is there a
   depot specifically for mathematical applications
software? I would be happy to post mine there and
to see if Dr. Thacher would post his there. That is,
as soon as I get a cable for my 48 and the 28->48
   receiving program going.
4) Several programs recieve special mention (e.g.
Dr. Wickes' ->ASC (?)) but I have no idea where
to find them. A list of the libraries with some
idea of the contents, not just their location,
might help with questions like these.

Here at wuarchive.wustl.edu there is a specific subdirectory
that contains math software. So you are welcome to upload
programs in this category too. Please include a short description
in every file, so that I easily can decide in which directory
to place the programs.

Me too.

If there is such a list could it be accompanied by a 2d posting (suitable
for including into comp.archives, hint hint) with ftp site information
and other archive info? I'd like to put that stuff into comp.archives
regularly, & it's easiest if it's a separate post.
