[comp.sys.handhelds] Temp units on the 48sx

cloos@acsu.buffalo.edu (James H. Cloos) (10/05/90)

I feel compelled to add my thoughts to this. I still feel that the 48
gives the appropriate answer to 1_\^oC 1_\^oC +.

The bug, is that multiplication does not also convert to Kelvins
before performing the mathematics. Ideally, all references to temp
units in ANY calculation using a command not expressly designed to
operate differently (as TDELTA and TINC from the EQ card are) should
ALWAYS convert the given temp units to Kelvins, do its thing, and then
convert back to the given temp units as per the unit conversion specs.

This seems to me to be the best thing to do.

Temperature units work consistently with the rest of the unit system when
used in multiplicative operations since we are only interested in the
relative size of the respective "degree", IMHO.

It seems to me that there are times when temperatures SHOULD be converted
to absolute temperatures for additive operations, and also when they should
NOT be converted for additive operations. If I were a betting man, I'd bet
you that you'll see a flag to differentiate between these two cases in a
future version of the units application.
