[comp.sys.handhelds] upload problems

vervalin@AUSTIN.LOCKHEED.COM (Paul Vervalin) (10/07/90)

OK, here's the situation. I have a standard HP48SX, with no expansion RAM
(i.e. I only have 32K). It contains many files, some big some small, and I
have about 5K remaining unused. Let's say there's a program that I want to
download from my computer that is 9K in size. Well, there's not enough
memory, so I go looking for something that I haven't used for awhile to get
rid of. When I find it I realize that I have made some changes to it so I
better back it up first. Let's say it is 8K in size. If I get rid of 8K,
I will then have a total of 13K available for the 9K program I want to
download. But, when I go to upload the 8K directory I don't want, I get
an "insufficient memory" error! WHAT? Does this mean that the 48SX needs
at least as much RAM available as the size of the object being uploaded?
What if I only had three 9K objects, nothing could be uploaded individually.
Something must be wrong here, could someone please help me out? I know there
are workarounds, i.e. upload individual files in the directory instead of the
whole thing, but that's not what I want to do! HELP!

The "insufficient memory" problem with uploads usually means you're trying
to upload in ASCII mode. Upload in BINARY mode and the problem should
cease. Then, later when you have room in the machine, you can download it
again and re-upload in ASCII to get an edit-able PC copy of the file.
