I need some information on a couple of ten-year-old programmable calculators: Pananasonic RL 1400 Monroe (don't have model number) About each, I'd like to know: -- When did it first become available? -- What was its capacity (for data, for programs)? -- What programming language(s) did it use? -- Did it have an alphanumeric display? I'd prefer Email replies, and thanks. -- David G. Kay, Information & Computer Science, University of Calif., Irvine -- kay@ics.uci.edu, (714) 856-5072

The Panasonic RL 1400 (or RL H 1400), as it was popularly known, became available soon after I decided to buy one. I can't remember when. The 1400 came with 4K of RAM, about 1400 bytes available. Oddly enough. You could program the 1400 in 3 languages: Microsoft BASIC, something called Snap BASIC, and Snap FORTH. There were also: A file manager, a calculator, and a clock with alarms built in, and an RPN scientific calculator module available. The unit had a 20-character alphanumeric LCD display. If you want one with all of the above (and a 16K memory module, battery- backed, be it known that David Motto, 2754 Granada (Apt 2A), Jackson, Michigan 49202 has one available at a reasonable price - no reasonable offer refused ($200? I spent much more on it).
