Responding to questions from karman@wwc1.wwc.edu (sorry to post it on c.s.h,
but email kept bouncing):

Hi Andy,

Quick answers to your two questions before I go home:

Okay, this is all unofficial, but:

The 1200?2400? baud phone hookups are extremely noisy. You will often get
spurious characters or a 1:1 signal-to-noise ratio both directions. The
9600 baud phone line is a lot cleaner. I've only ever used the slow line,
and if things get really bad, I hang up and call back. Try it. It may take
2 or 3 calls to get a clean connection. (It's a pain, I know. A single
data-only phone line it would be better, but they're going through
a PBX optimized for voice traffic, and they don't have enough priority to
qualify for a FAX line. Are FAX lines cleaner?)

When it got really bad for me, I signed on as a new user again. I now have
3 different logins and 3 different passwords on the system. I asked the
sysop to delete the latter 2, but they're still there. I would suggest that
you sign on again as a new user.

The BBS isn't the best in the world, but considering the budget they had to
work with, it's really pretty good (if you get clean wires). It does see a
lot of traffic.

Oh, one last thing: it's quietest after 12 midnight Pacific time.

Good luck.
