I cannot believe HP would sponser such a pice of drek. Where is the file directory? Why do none of the menu options work? Where is the damn sysop?

I hope the feelings of the people at HP aren't hurt too much by all the ranting about their BBS. It is actually very flexible once one gets used to it. The ability to attach files to messages is actually quite neat. It is frustrating to learn a complex new BBS at long distance telephone rates when the real desire is to get info on a calculator. Perhaps HP could write up a tutorial full of examples that work and lots of explanation and sell it for $5 or $10. . They probably could have saved some grief for themselves and others by using a cheap PC and BBS, but then the tie in to comp.sys.handhelds wouldn't be there and multi phone lines would be difficult or expensive. I do suspect that the vast majority of people calling in have a pc or mac and that most unix computers must have a vt100 emulator in them somewhere. They should dig up a Vectra from somewhere, put PC Board, Auntie, or Phoenix on it with the single phone line in the manual, and put a message on it with a phone number and description for the other (current) bbs. The hassel would have to be much less than dealing with all the abuse they get and the frustrations of the many people confused by the current bbs must be adding up to a lot of bad feelings.

What are you talking about HP does not sponser this news group in anyway I
know of. The files you have to FTP for. If you news reader is broken
don't tell me tell your SA. You'll have to find your sysop on your own.

Pardon me for my insensitivity, but this posting provided enough fuel for a good 5-minute bout of laughter and a big grin I'll wear the rest of the day. Reminds me of my mother-in-law, cursing her car, Detroit and men all at the same time, because it doesn't work the way she wants it to work. The BBS is definitely unconventional in its execution, and intitally clumsy in its user interface. The phone lines occasionally get noisy, too. All that can be worked around. Like John Serafin said elsewhere, the BBS becomes versatile and flexible after you've used it for a while. You just have to learn it. If it helps any, remember that the BBS is running on a Un*x system, and it feels just like Un*x does to a novice. See what you've got to look forward to? Best of luck to the poor "damn sysop" and to my fellow BBS users. Welcome to Un*x, the OS of the future! Regards Ray rrd@hpfitst1 (or is that "the future anterior?")
