[comp.sys.handhelds] Hardware Hacker Challenge: 600 baud?

eddy@jafus.mi.org (Eddy J. Gurney) (10/22/90)

Ok... I know there's at least a couple of people who really enjoy
poking around the internals of the HP48. I have a request for you
guys: (whom I have MUCH respect for ;-) Next time you're looking
around, see if you can find any way to set the HP48 to do 600 baud.
(or is it 600 bps? Purists complain about that sort of stuff. :-)

I'm hoping there's some location in memory which holds a "clocking
constant" or something like that for the on-board UART (I thought I
read somewhere it had one, or at least something similar to it.)

Now... you're probably wondering why. (I would be if I was reading
this post - so I'll tell you.) I have one of those computer-controlled
PowerHouse X-10 Controllers that I picked up at a local swap-n-shop
last year for a GOOD price (brand new.) It came with software for the
C-64, which is obviously useless (to me). However it does have a complete
programming guide, and I think it would be really cool to use the HP48
as the programmer for it (and a lot easier than trying to write an
application for my Mac - although I'd settle for one if anyone knows
of a P.D. app :-). And as you've probably deduced, it uses 8-bit,
600 baud serial communication. _600_BAUD_! Geez.

So... tell me it will work (if it will). I'll be _really_ happy! 8-)

On the video of the June CHIP conf, Dr. Wickes (I *think* it was Bill)
said that the UART is only capable of 1200, 2400, 4800 & 9600 bps.
