From: Stephen X. Nahm <sxnahm@bbn-unix.arpa> When a bank returns your checks, you'll notice they encode the check amount (and usually its number) in standard bank digits on the bottom of the check, next to your account number. Their computers use this when processing the check. I want to have my (as yet fictional) computer be able to read this information (it would make statement reconciliation *real* quick). 1) How do the bank computers read these numbers? Optical character recognition? A pointer to a book which explains this would be nice. 2) Would your basic bar-code reader be adaptable (with sufficient programming) for OCR? Has anyone tried it? If not, what devices would do the trick? Reply to sxnahm@bbn-unix, as I am not on the Banking list. Thanks, Steve Nahm
