[comp.sys.handhelds] Free EQ deal and complaints

JMEYERS@MTUS5.BITNET (11/06/90)

I would like to comment on the complaining that I have heard recently from
the people who bought their HP-48SX before (or after) the time period in
which HP was offering the free EQ card. The offer is no different in
concept than a car rebate from a manufacturer. If you buy the car during
the time that a $1,000 rebate is offered, you get the rebate. Otherwise,
you are just tuff out of luck. This is the exact same case with the
free EQ card. If you bought the HP-48SX on Sept. 14 then you are not
entitled to the card and there should not be any complaining. If some one
wants to dissagree with me then please state the reason why you believe
that it should be any different.

Sincerely,
Jason P. Meyers

Hey, I'm not that upset with HP... I mean you make a good point.
But many stores do allow you to get the sale price of an item if the
item goes on sale a period after that.
The reason is when you give customers a break they tend to stay loyal.

The only thing that upsets me is that my calculator was lost (not by me)
during the deadline and I missed the deadline while trying to find out
or decide between the HP28 and 48. My calculator was the apparently now
ancient HP41... I had no idea the benefits and drawbacks between the 28
and 48. The salesman where I went did not tell me anything about a
fall promotion nor could they tell me anything about the two calculators.
I ended up trying to compare the two owners manuals in the store, but
I wasn't able to come up with a definite conclusion.
I finally tried to gain experience thru a local news group - I didn't
even know about this news group.... I even found out about HP calc hotline
and call them for more info and found a review on the HP48.
By the time, I had all the info I needed to make a decision,
poof the deadline was gone. Now if that salesman had told me about the
deadline on the offer, perhaps I could have acted more quickly and taken
advantage of the offer. Come to think of it, if I knew about the equation
card, I would have bought it on the spot.

So I hold nothing against HP (except for I wish the deadline had been longer)
but it makes me made because I could have probably gotten a lot of use
out of the card and probably will not be able to get it now...
I probably won't have as much use for many to 48 functions as I would have
had for the card.
It would have been ideal with the 48 (for me).
I know tough Sh*t, right ? (I understand the reasoning it's just a tough
attitude to have towards your customers.)

This only tells me that maybe I should wait on buying in case another
promotion comes around or some other brand has a good deal...

When this thread last came up a few months ago, the complaints came from
people who, like me, bought their HP48s *before* the fall promotion started.
These are the loyal people. Many of us sold our HP28S's and immediately
bought the new HP product.

->So I hold nothing against HP (except for I wish the deadline had been longer)

I disagree here. The promo should have started earlier - the same time the
calculator came on the market.

What are you asking for? That the promo be extended forever?

Another brand? There is no other brand... and you call yourself loyal...

By your opinion. If you really want to stretch things, why didn't you keep
your HP28 and force the person who you sold it to, to go buy their own
in addition to buying your own ?
And thereby, making HP a better profit ?
That's loyal ! But just because you went and bought your calculator right
away is no test of loyalty.

Whatever. You bought yours before hand so you want it started earlier. I
wanted to buy mine later so I wanted it stretched out. All personal preference.

No I just said the TOUGH SH*T attitude is tough attitude to have towards your
customers. Did I say anything about the promo being extended forever ?
Hmmm, I must have missed that.

Sounds like to me you are bitter (i.e. kicking yourself in the butt) for
buying too soon. Sounds like to me if you had been a little more patient,
you would have had been able to take advantage of the offer too.

I'm sorry but not everyone spends all their time waiting hand and foot for
HP to get a new product out. So some of us (at least me) probably didn't have
any idea that a 48SX existed. Like I said before, I didn't find out about
comp.sys.handhelds until I started looking for a new HP. I like the HP48
but I can tell you now that I will never use it nearly as much as you do.
But I would have used the equation card... In others words, I like the HP48,
but I don't "sleep" with it so obviously I want the best deal possible.
It took me time to find out with calculator had the things I needed and whether
or not I need to pay the extra $$ for the HP48 over the 28.
If you are familiar with a new products, I would hope that even you'd research
before rushing out and buying it.

Next, there is a difference between loyal and blind stupidity. I think I'm
loyal simply in the fact that I didn't even consider another calculator
initially. I'll stay loyal until I feel like I missed something. And I do
feel like I've missed something - I think you do too. But looking around
only keeps people/businesses honest. HP is still my number one preference
but I see nothing with making sure someone isn't giving me more for my
money. HP wasn't always the best - at some point loyal customers of another
brand had to realize HP was offering a better product and make the switch.

Lastly, (as I said before) I hold nothing against HP. I'm really pissed at the
salesman who didn't know his products or bother to inform me of any "fall
promotion". If he did, I'd have both my HP48 and an equation card.

Peace.
