[comp.sys.handhelds] lcd problem?

s25bt@gandalf.Berkeley.EDU (Keith Kong) (11/08/90)

Several posts back, someone mentioned about a replacement 48SX
displaying weird lcd behavior which can be likened to what
you see when you turn off the tv. Well, my newly bought 48SX
showed the same type of problem. I was fiddling with the on-D
<- sequence, when suddenly, when I pressed the 8 key, zap! The
screen was flooded with on pixels which slowly disappeared, leaving
the screen blank. I had to do a on-C to get back, but once I got
back, everything was working normally. Further experiments indicate
that there's nothing special about 8, but the lcd blanking was
limited to on-D <- sequence followed by keys which changed the
address display. However, a few minutes later, when I repeated
the on-D <- sequence, no ununsual lcd behavior showed up. Has
anybody else's 48SX displayed this screen blanking effect? I'd
hate to see this happen in the middle of an exam!

Helpful Hint #386:
Do not do the on-D <- sequence in the middle of an exam.

You're welcome. :-)

Some weeks/months ago, someone else mentioned about displaying a graphic
object and noticed one corner starting to fade away. A follow up post
mentioned that HP realized that it was a defect in older LCD (or something
like that) and replaced it. What surprises me is that my newly replaced
Rev E 48SX seems to still have similar problem!

IF I understand the descriptions of the LCD problem, there is probably
no problem.

When you fiddle with the on-D <- sequence, you are entering the HP's
memory debugger/tester.
I won't go into detail, but it is possible to alter the HP's LCD
voltages, which can produce
a disturbing but basically harmless effect. (HP describes a possible
reliability problem if
you do this frequently).

Basically, stay out of the debugger. If you are getting weird LCD
melting or bleeding, but
you are NOT fiddling with the debugger, or some kind of POKE program,
then you have a problem,
but that's what customer service numbers are for.

Sure, Keith was fooling around with the debugger and got the funny screen
fading. That's no surprise. But I get that everytime I power on! The
more I use it, the more I think I need another replacement!!
