Greetings to all HANDHELDS@GAC.EDU mailing list readers. The long message queues on GACVX1 have finaly cleared themselves out. There should be no more GATTO messages. I have been able to upgrade the mailer on GACVX1 and GACVX2 to the latest version. The mailing list expansion is now done by GACVX2, since it had the campus netnews database. The BUG that caused the many thousands of GATTO messages has been fixed in the latest version of the mailer (so says the manual, and my tests confirm that at least its old manifestation is gone.) HANDHELDS@GAC.EDU and HANDHELDS@GACVAX1.BITNET are mailing lists maintained by Gustavus Adolphus College. These two are the same mailing list, but two addresses are provided, since many BITNET sites do not have the software to process Internet addresses, and many Internet administrators object to the use of .BITNET as a domain name. Messages send to either address are distributed to all members of the handhelds mailing list and posted to the USENET group COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS. Since we wanted to operate a bi-directional gateway, postings from the COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS newsgroup are distributed by mail to the members of the HANDHELDS mailing lists. Many people send subscription control messages to the HANDHELDS mailing list and others, I have done it at times by accident. The readers of the newsgroup and mailing list do not appreciate these messages. There is no program that will pick these out. Someone is likely to send you a flame. I do not act on these messages when I see them. If your mailer generates replyable addresses use the following to join the mailing list. Send a mail message to "MAILSERV@GAC.EDU" or "MAILSERV@GACVAX1.BITNET". The subject line on this message is ignored. In the body of the message put the line "SUBSCRIBE HANDHELDS real name" substituting your real name in place of "real name". For example: $ mail To: mailserv@gac.edu Subj: SUBSCRIBE HANDHELDS John Smith To leave the mailing list send the command SIGNOFF or UNSUBSCRIBE in the same manner. Your real name in not required on the SIGNOFF or UNSUBSCRIBE commands. $ mail To: mailserv@gac.edu Subj: SIGNOFF HANDHELDS To learn about other MAILSERV commands send "HELP" in the body of the message. These commands must be sent to MAILSERV in order to work. If your mailer does not generate replyable addresses, but people can send you mail using a Internet, BITNET or UUCP address. Send a message to POSTMASTER@GAC.EDU or POSTMASTER@GACVAX1.BITNET asking to be added to the HANDHELDS mailing list. POSTMASTER is a human.
