[comp.sys.handhelds] Minehunt high score

edp@ipl31.enet.dec.com (Eric Postpischil (Always mount a scratch monkey.)) (12/08/90)

Okay, I did Minehunt with 48 mines. Actually, I think it is more interesting to
do it with fewer mines but to explore the entire playfield.

Today I finally completed 48 mines with a score of 76 (80 is max for 48 mines).
I agree it is more fun to explore the entire minefield, but you'll find that
with more than 40 mines, this becomes extremely difficult, mainly because a lot
of the open spaces are "buried" in blocks of mines. Today's game (48 mines/
76 points) had three such "buried" spots, which is actually quite low for
this many mines. The other space was accessible, but I could only tell it was
in one of two spaces, and it wasn't worth blowing such a good game, so I let
it rest! The highest number of mines that I've maxed score for is 42. I've
come within 4 of the max score for 44, 46, and 48 mines. The best score I've
had for 50 mines so far is 41 (I haven't even reached the goal yet), where 78
would be the max. The most aggravating thing is when you have a good game
going and you find that there is no path to the goal, because it's completely
barricaded!

Okay. But tied for "most aggravating" is when the game starts off with
"NEAR 3 MINES."

Or when it says "Near 2 mines", and you guess the right one, and then it
says "Near 4 mines", so it did you no good to guess right!

More fun than "near 3 mines" immediately is to take the diagonal and get "near 7
mines".

Anyway, the new record for number of mines is: 54.
