Of course, HP re-wrote the compiler to produce native code, and about half of the system is written in assembler. The system is blindingly fast. My (the company's) 9836 had 1.5Mbytes in it, so I was able to make the compiler, editor, and filer memory resident. On top of that, I was able to edit a .5 Mbyte file and still get reasonable performance out of the doggone thing. Of course, I detest the p-System user interface. The editor is really crummy, but then I was used to an editor that I had written for the HP3000. This editor (excuse me while I brag) had keyboard macros, undo all changes in an edit session, built-in help, and an init file, to configure the editor with your own macros. So you can understand how much I hate the p-System editor. Russ Nelson...hp-pcd!hp-cvd!russ
