[comp.sys.handhelds] Casio SF-8000 pc-link problem

TTL-JJK@finou.oulu.fi (Jari Kaitera) (01/22/91)

I have a strange problem with my computer (386-33MHz) and the data-link.
I can not get the link to work with my computer. All I get is a transmission
error. I tried to change my io-card and it still didn't work with the new one.
I also tried to run dos 3.3 instead of 4.1 I am using. No change...
I tried to connect another SF-8000 to my computer using the data-link, still
no progress. But when I connected my unit to a normal old PC-computer the
thing worked. There might be something wrong with the computer but what can it
be? If the io-card is working what else can be wrong? Has anyone had same kind
of problems?

Is the computer that "doesn't work" a portable or laptop PC? Many laptop
machines, since they run off battery power, look for a strong (at least 5
volts) signal on the serial input line, and therefore they never see any
input or acknowledgement from the 48. Desktop PCs, on the other hand, are
more forgiving, and can pick up the 48's low voltage signal just fine.

My wife has one of these and we had problems getting it to work
also. Our problem turned out to be darn simple: the casing of the plug
that plugs into the Casio was interfering with plugging the cable all
the way in. Even though it felt as if the plug was completely seated,
it wasn't. I finally noticed that by pressing the plug firmly into
place, that the interface worked. Hopefully, that's your problem.
