[comp.sys.handhelds] ROM version

Ian.Frechett@samba.acs.unc.edu (BBS Account) (07/21/90)

Ok ok, What's the deal with the rom versions? I just bought my hp48.
I could still take it back if I had to. First, how do I check to see which
version I have? I seem to remember something about that before but I can't
find it anywhere in my archives. Second, Which exactly seem to be the
offending ROM versions? I get the impression that no one is sure why they
are messed up... Any clues? I want a machine that is going to last. I am
not interested in working around problems. What's the scoop?
And, once again, I have to ask if ANYONE has that Communications
program for the 48.. You might be tempted to say "Check hpBBS". NO. That
is why I need the damn thing. I do not have a PC so I have NO way to dowload
any programs. I have hordes of programs sitting around taking up space in my
UNIX account and I can't use them. I'm not such a masochist that I willing
to type in a few, 500 line programs. I want to be able to write the programs
on my UNIX with a real keybaord and then download it to the 48. Is this
unreasonable. I have had a bout 3 people tell me, sure enough the program
exists, and was even posted on this group. Don't tell me that NOBODY could
see the enormous potential for this.. I have a windows program for the UNIX
and I tryed setting up a 22X7 window and plying in it. It is quite useable.
Someone mentioned how you might be able to impress someone with the 48.
Wouldn't plugging the thing into a modem and calling up your account be
impressive. Then how about you download an interesting program and show it
off. I might also add that the hacking potential is enormous. I am not a
hacker for the most part but I CAN see the potential.
Please, don't be afraid, anyone and everyone who has a couple
minutes, could you please send me this program. I am not afraid of lots of
replies. My mail handler will take care of them. My mail handler gets
lonely though when noone mails anything to my account. ;) If you are the
exchange kind of person then I will say that I have a few very interesting
UNIX programs that I would love to show off. If I had a reasonable way to
download stuff I might even spend a little money and explore hpBBS. I do
have a terminal and modem, but dowloading to it is Right out. Help me.
Thank you.
Please mail to frechett@snoopy.colorado.edu If that doesn't work
then you can mail here and I will forward. Thank you.

All you need is kermit and a cable. I have been transfering programs from
my unix machine without any trouble.

Kermit is usually already available on most unix machines.

I purchased my 48SX Approx. a month ago and I am very curious to know what
ROM version I have.

What I am wondering is, what is the easiest way to find out the version?

Thanks...

First my thanks to those who sent me messages on how to find out which
ROM version I have.

To those whose would also like to find out, here is a simple procedure.

1) Turn on the 48sx
2) Hold down ON and press D, release both keys.
3) Press BackSpace, the key next to DEL
4) Then press EVAL, this is display the ROM version
5) Hond down ON and press C, release both keys, in order to get back.

My next question is what is the latest ROM version? I just bought my 48sx
a week ago. My ROM version was D. As I understand it there is an E version
out. If this was released a while ago should I go back to the store and
complain since I got a D? That is, what are the major differences between
the versions? Is it important to have an E version? After paying nearly
$300 I would expect the current release.
